Traditional Korean Dessert in a Modern Cafe

‘Jeokdang’ which is easily accessible to Seoul travelers

Today I would like to write about the cafe for it where we visited several times with introducing Korean dessert. The location of the cafe is in one of the buildings connected to Euljiro Station – Line 2. As most people know, Metro Line 2 is the most useful transportation in Seoul Korea. The station is just by Myeongdong in Seoul where shopping centers and travel attractions gather. This means it is definitely easily accessible for Seoul travelers! Also, please note that not only travel accessibility is advantageous but also desserts are exceptional.

The cafe interior of traditional but modern

This Korea Dessert cafe also features an awesome interior. The cafe uses charming red colors for rugs and lighting. Particularly, the lighting caught many customers’ hearts. So I looked up the name of them, and it turned out; VP Globe from Verner Panton. It is so trendy these days so I also was familiar with the design. It’s a product I was trying to remember because it’s very famous, but why is it so hard for me to memorize the name..?

Anyway, back to the store review, here is never monotonous even with the off-white and wooden background color that makes the space attractive. I think these charming points made me visit three times. I love the attitude that respects tradition and some intentional touches of the contemporary atmosphere.

For our second visit, we sat at a large table in the center of the cafe. Because I fancied decorative elements that remind me of a Japanese-style garden that maximizes Eastern oriental beauty. This Korea Dessert Cafe is recommendable for someone looking for a Korean vibe and a modern feeling.

Korean Dessert 1 – Ang Butter

Here Korean dessert is mainly made from red bean, which has delightful sweetness. The familiar ones are the Ang Butter Sandwich and the Ang Butter Scone. FYI, the word ‘Ang Butter’ is derived from ‘Ang’ meaning red bean and Butter… the butter. The sandwich is made of rice cake instead of bread overlapping red beans and butter. But we didn’t notice that before having a bite. The desserts are nicely sliced so easy to grab. It became my husband’s favorite among other desserts from this cafe. Well, yes, he has sweet teeth.

Korean Dessert 2 – Yang-gaeng / Yokan

In fact, the most popular menu in the cafe is Yang-gaeng (Yokan/sweet jelly of red beans). There were variable flavor options: Pistachio, brown sugar, chocolate, hazelnut, milk tea…and more! And the flavor we chose was not that sweet so I loved it a lot. Previously or until now, Yang-gaeng used to be reckoned as a snack for the elderly and uncles. But what here serves came to me very fresh because it has nicely transformed into modern plating. It serves in a lovely way. Small wood tables on a tray are used for placing the Yanggaeng.
